I love travelling across Italy in fall. The air is milder, the light is sweeter, the shadows are longer than ever and the summer turist assault has ceased, eventually. It’s the perfect time to go for a ride and explore some unusual destinations.

Last weekend we headed toward the region of Abruzzi, Province of L’Aquila. Within the “Gran Sasso” and the “Monti della Laga” National Park lies Rocca Calascio, a stone fortress built in the 11th Century for military purposes.

Rocca Calascio was the location for the last scene of Richard Donner film Ladyhawke. Look, is there a better place for a fantasy film?

All around the Apennines designed an extraordinary profile and offered us a view to remember, forever.

We got there minutes before sunset and had just the time to reach the top of the mountain and enjoy the uniqueness of the moment.

The last rays drew oblique and mysterious shadows on the walls.

Other visitors waited for the sunset and we shared in complete silence this spectacular effect; then the night came.

A simple tip: in the small village you can find a rustic accommodation, a small but quality restaurant (we enjoyed an exquisite candlelight dinner) and don’t forget to taste a glass of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo red wine.
